SURABHILA KERALAM
….we drive to cleanliness
The question that what is the most important global problem is easily answered that it is global warming. The small state of Kerala is also affected by the same. Adding to it is the increasing issues of waste management. The state government and the local self governments struggle to dispose and mange the wastes. There have been instances of conflicts through out the state between the local people and the governments in areas of waste treatment plants. Interestingly the issue of waste management is triggered by the unhealthy and unsocial practices of Keralites. An ordinary Keralite is very sensitive of personal hygiene and cleanliness as well as in their domestic premises. But the same person maintains apathy in marinating cleanliness in public areas and pollutes surroundings by depositing all types of wastes in public spaces. The incidence of communicable diseases in various parts of the state and the endemic fever in monsoon are contributed by the mosquitoes and filthy public environment. Various social organisations and the government agencies attempt to enhance the cleanliness and proper waste management through different programmes. But a lot more initiative is required to reach a minimum standard in cleanliness and waste management in the state.
